Edit: Here guys, so I can sleep better knowing you can see closer to how it is supposed to look. WIPs and close ups taken with digital camera on my tumblr:[link]
I can't even tell you how pissed I am at my scanner right now. It completely ruined this and I don't have the patience to keep messing with it in PS right now to even figure out if it's salvageable. I'm beginning to think it would be best to set things up so I can just take photos of all my colorful traditional art. God dammit.
Today is China's Mid-Autumn Festival.. I really couldn't pass up the chance to do something like this, especially since the idea of surrounding Shen with lanterns had come to mind quite awhile ago, so I just incooperated it for the festival idea.
I added symbolism, since the festival is a celebration of the moon and unity with family. Shen is holding a moon cake which represents both of those aspects; staring down at it remembering how things used to be.
Though I started it earlier this week, I worked on it like crazy all night with a bad cold.. tissues stuffed up my nose most of the time, to get it finished for today. I'm going to go sleep now. OTL /passes out

If THIS is what happens when your picture is "ruined" by the scanner. Then I think the real picture would kill be because of its beauty! This is so, so, so beautiful! Its visuals are amazing and the symbolism is perfect!
Maybe I should check my dA more often...School and this Tournament I'm prepping for is getting in the way. It's like every time I come back stuff is burried and I need to wade through a ton of stuff. Though I'm glad I did today. I love the colors of this one. It really does feel like Autumn or the end of Summer even. And the depth of the color is just remarkable too. I'm just loving all your fan art! I would love to see this matted and framed to be honest.
I hope you're feeling better by now from your cold. Flus and Colds suck so bad.
I bet it would be why he needs a lady who knows everything about compassion, forgiveness, sympathy, empathy and understanding by his side. If he does, he would seriously lock his arms around her refusing to let go as he is extremely gratefully yearning to have her stay with him. In fact, live with him in his palace.
This is true. I just wish scanner technology was at least as good as digital cameras. Maybe there are scanners that good out there that aren't ridiculously expensive, but I haven't encountered them yet. I guess they figure since scanners are usually meant to scan text documents and people can just take digital photos now, the need to improve them isn't there.
You more or less hit the nail right smack on the head. The only scanners of artistry grade are - unsurprisingly - for proffessional artists and designers, and so are appropriately out of the pocket of small-timers. *I say professional - I simply mean with cash to burn on something as 'trivial' as a scanner -.- tis all about the money after all >.<*
I'm glad you think so (I'm kind of getting used to it.. a little) but I think if you saw it in real life, you'd be just as disgusted with this scan as I am. It's just hard for me to swallow hours worth of work and love, to see time after time that scanner butcher my drawings. Main reason I switched to bristol and markers instead of solely colored pencils, or digital. Cause THIS happens! OTL
I truly do; it looks amazing, and I can sympathize with you regarding the disappointment of seeing the natural beauty of a piece dulled by a wonky scanner. Ever since I switched over to using my home scanner (HP Photosmart C4580--I used to use the crappy ones at work), I've had less problems. Even then, I'm almost always forced to tweak the colors a bit in PS.
I've thought about using a professional service (i.e. Kinko's or some specialty service) for scanning--or I would if I actually did fully traditional pieces...something I just don't have the time for. However, I can imagine them being pricy...
New scanners do scan things differently, but if you haven't tried this, make sure you're scanning at, at least 300dpi, it might help with the pixelation. You can experiment with a higher res (if it allows you to) to see which might look better.
And no no, I meant this drawing was scanned (which is why to me it looks like crap), but I did also take photos of it and stuck them up on tumblr, and the digital camera did a way better job than the scanner with accurately showing how the drawing looks in real life.
Beautiful. It looks like light is brilliantly shining from the lanterns (not sure if this was an intended effect or result from the scanner, either way the image sure pops!) I love the look of sad contemplation and the color composition. Two pictures all in a matter of days? Hooray! Thanks for sharing with us. I hope you recover from your cold soon. They suck. I'm dealing with one myself too.
The part you mentioned was intended. The scanner just didn't pick up some colors, made the gradient in the sky too bold instead of looking more smoothly blended, and picked up a lot of grain from the paper that isn't actually seen in real life, or made it look ugly and blunt instead of more natural. The green lanterns for example, didn't pick up at all and I was forced to add the color back in PS. There is also supposed to be a salmon color gradient on the sky lanterns so they aren't just orange-yellow..
I'm still deciding if I should even go through the effort to attempt to make it look nicer, I just have a feeling it will be in vain. You can see a better representation of it on my tumblr, though. It's dark, but the colors and smoothness are accurate, at least.
I'm trying to post more regularly again. OTL My experimentation with markers are one of the biggest reasons things are taking so long... I want to at least have my marker work look on par with the rest of the stuff in my gallery, but it can be difficult getting comfortable with a new medium. But despite that, I have a lot of plans for some big stuff coming up.
Hope you're feeling better. I'm currently in the stage of choking on phlegm stuck in my lungs!
As well, so what if it's taking a while to post frequently. If you're learning you're making progress. It is difficult getting familiar with a new medium but I hope you're having fun with it. Learning to use acrylics was a ton of fun but I sadly didn't have enough patience to continue that. Keep at it! Starting to feel better but for some reason I'm losing my voice and sounding like a chain smoker. Yuck.
